🩺 A New Practice-Oriented Educational Initiative Is Launching at Bogomolets National Medical University
On September 1, 2026, Bogomolets National Medical University (NMU) will launch a new educational project — the Individual Practice-Oriented Educational Pathway (IPOT) for higher education students at the NMU University Clinic.
The new format is designed to strengthen the practical component of medical education, give students the opportunity to learn directly in a professional clinical environment, and build their own professional development pathway with the support of an experienced clinical mentor.
As part of the project, the future clinical mentors who will take part in its implementation have already completed specialized training.
🎓 Learning Directly in a Clinical Environment
The main goal of IPOT is to immerse senior-year students in the Medicine and Dentistry programs in a real clinical environment and help them develop the professional competencies they need.
The program offers an individual educational pathway combining lectures, interactive classes, and work with patients. This approach will allow students not only to gain theoretical knowledge but also to develop modern practical skills, better understand their future profession, and gradually integrate into the healthcare system.
Participants will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience that can become an important foundation for their professional development and help them confidently contribute to the future of Ukrainian medicine.
👩⚕️ A Mentor as a Guide into the Profession
Mentor training has been one of the key stages in preparing for the launch of IPOT.
A clinical mentor will become a guide for students entering the professional environment — helping them set individual learning goals, supporting their practical activities, providing constructive feedback, encouraging reflection, and contributing to their ongoing professional growth.
That is why the training of future mentors focused not only on introducing them to the IPOT concept. Participants also developed specific competencies and gained practical tools needed for effective mentoring in a clinical environment.
👥 Who Took Part in the Training
The speakers included NMU Rector Yurii Kuchyn, Director General of the NMU University Clinic Nina Proshchenko, Head of the Department of Educational and Methodological Work, Licensing and Accreditation Inna Kucherenko, Head of the Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies Department Kateryna Hololobova, Director of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Medicine Serhii Zemskov and his deputies Volodymyr Melnyk and Ruslan Tsymbaliuk, Director of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Dentistry Andrii Kopchak, his deputy Nataliia Bidenko, and IPOT implementation coordinator Emir Chehertma, as well as Olena Khaustova, Head of the Department of Medical Psychology, Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy, and Iryna Voloshyna, Head of the Department of General Practice (Family Medicine).
📚 Two Days — From Concept to Practical Tools
On the first day, participants explored the idea and concept of IPOT, the role of mentoring in medical education, and the modern model of clinical mentoring.
They also discussed the role and competencies of a clinical mentor, the organization of the educational process, onboarding, and data protection.
Special attention was given to medical ethics and professional conduct, as well as academic integrity in educational and clinical environments.
The second day focused on practical mentoring tools.
Participants worked with the Workplace Learning approach, the competency-based approach to medical education, and the development of clinical reasoning. They also discussed psychological safety within the educational environment.
The practical sessions covered effective mentoring meetings, principles of constructive feedback, formative and summative assessment, and reflection as a tool for professional development.
