Innovation Space, established at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, has received the Highly Commended distinction in the Social Impact category at the Reuters Events Global Sustainability Awards 2026. This international recognition highlights the hub’s contribution to social impact through engineering innovation, research, and the development of practical solutions for veterans and people with limb amputations.
Innovation Through Collaboration
Launched in May 2025, Innovation Space is a joint initiative of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, product IT company OBRIO, and Genesis for Ukraine Charity Foundation.
The hub brings together engineering education, scientific research, and hands-on development, creating an environment where innovative ideas can be transformed into practical technologies. Its facilities include laboratories for 3D printing, modelling, design, and scanning. Innovation Space also supports startup development and new certificate programmes, encouraging collaboration between students, researchers, and industry professionals.
Measurable Social Impact
Since its launch, Innovation Space has achieved significant results:
- 100+ veterans, students, and researchers have participated in the hub’s activities.
- 70+ prototypes have been developed.
- 25 orthoses have been created for veterans.
These achievements demonstrate how engineering expertise and interdisciplinary collaboration can address real-world challenges. In particular, the hub contributes to the development of personalised prosthetic and rehabilitation solutions designed to support people with limb amputations.
The initiative illustrates the potential of combining academic knowledge, technological innovation, and partnerships with the private and charitable sectors to create meaningful social change.
Engineering for a Better Future
The international recognition received at the Reuters Events Global Sustainability Awards 2026 marks an important achievement for the Innovation Space team and its partners. It also highlights the role of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in advancing engineering solutions that respond to pressing societal needs.
By connecting education, research, industry, and social initiatives, Innovation Space demonstrates how engineering can extend beyond the laboratory to improve people’s lives.
Congratulations to the Innovation Space team on this achievement and its contribution to a more inclusive and sustainable future!
