The medical institution welcomed official representatives from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Japan in Ukraine. During the meeting, the parties focused on two critically important areas: studying the long-term consequences of the Chornobyl disaster and developing modern rehabilitation programs for Ukraine’s defenders. This partnership opens new opportunities for sharing expertise and implementing advanced medical practices.
During the meeting, Rector of O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University, Professor Yurii Kuchyn, expressed his gratitude to the people of Japan for their continued and systematic support. He introduced the delegation to the capabilities, technical resources, and professional potential of the University Clinic, as well as the university’s priorities in international cooperation.
Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ayano Kunimitsu, who is a physician and holds a doctoral degree (PhD) and is a graduate of Nagasaki University, emphasized the shared mission of both countries. She noted that Ukraine and Japan have unique experience in addressing the consequences of major radiation disasters — Chornobyl (1986) and Fukushima (2011) — making scientific cooperation in this field particularly valuable and effective. Ms. Kunimitsu also expressed her deep respect for Ukrainian military personnel and medical professionals and confirmed her commitment to further strengthening the partnership.

The clinic received the equipment from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), with the support of the Embassy of Japan, as part of a program supporting mental health care and cancer treatment in Ukraine. The delegation also visited the rehabilitation department, where they met with physicians and wounded Ukrainian service members.
The visit concluded with the identification of priorities for further technical and scientific cooperation. The parties agreed to strengthen the exchange of medical expertise. Key university departments will play an important role in this process, including the Department of Radiology and Radiation Medicine, which conducts research into the effects of radiation on the cardiovascular system, and the Department of Healthcare Management, a leader in developing digital competencies in Ukrainian medical education.
