🇩🇪 Bringing European Experience to Ukraine: Bavaria Summer Academy
This summer, Dina Koltysheva, Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Bioenergy, Bioinformatics and Ecobiotechnology at the Faculty of Biotechnology of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, took part in the Summer Academy of the Bavarian Environmental Administration in Hof, Germany.
The intensive two-week educational and professional training programme covered a wide range of current topics in environmental law and practical environmental protection. Participants explored the fundamental principles of water and nature conservation legislation, emission control, waste management and soil protection.
Particular attention was paid to European Union environmental requirements and their implementation in national legislation, cooperation with local communities, financial mechanisms and the management of municipal services.
The programme combined lectures, professional discussions and practical visits to leading municipal enterprises and private companies. Participants gained first-hand knowledge of sustainable drinking-water supply and wastewater treatment technologies, including ANAMMOX processes, the use of macrophytes for advanced water purification, and different approaches depending on wastewater volumes.
A significant part of the academy focused on waste recycling and innovative glass-to-glass recycling technologies. German experts also presented modern approaches to climate assessment, weather and precipitation forecasting, with a particular focus on flood prevention. Participants studied biomonitoring of organisms and rivers and analysed the current environmental legislation in this field.
The academic programme was complemented by a rich cultural experience. Participants visited the historic German cities of Nuremberg, Bamberg, Rothenburg and Ansbach, as well as Mödlareuth — known as “Little Berlin” because of its historical division — and the Deutsch-Deutsches Museum Mödlareuth, providing a deeper insight into European history.
Dina Koltysheva expressed her sincere gratitude to the organisers Matthias Worst and Svitlana Kozmenko, as well as all the experts involved, for the valuable theoretical and practical knowledge that will contribute to her further scientific and professional work in Ukraine.
