⚛️ An Open Dialogue Between Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute Students and Steven Goldfarb
Modern physics, experimental research and fundamental science: students of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute took part in an open dialogue with Steven Goldfarb, a French-American experimental particle physicist, researcher and scientist in the field of particle physics.
ℹ️ Steven Goldfarb is a researcher at the University of Melbourne, a member of the ATLAS Collaboration at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, and Co-Chair of the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG).
👥 For the KPI community, he delivered a lecture entitled “Universal Questions: How We Measure What We Can’t See.”
📋 The discussion covered the journey from the first observations and simple experiments to large-scale international research; the Large Hadron Collider, highly precise measurements and working with enormous volumes of scientific data; technologies that emerge thanks to fundamental science; artificial intelligence as a tool for modern scientific research; critical thinking and the role of experimental data; as well as questions that physics is still trying to answer, including dark matter, dark energy, the asymmetry between matter and antimatter, and the nature of gravity.
The participants also discussed the role of young scientists who will create the technologies of the next generations. 📌 A special focus was placed on how Ukrainian students can become part of global science while still studying. CERN brings together universities and scientific institutions from different countries, while the path to major international experiments can begin with a research project, collaboration with a scientific group, or participation in an international programme.
🌍 Such opportunities allow students to gain valuable research experience, communicate with scientists from around the world and become part of the international scientific community.
❓ Following the lecture, a Q&A session gave students, PhD students, young researchers and university lecturers the opportunity to communicate directly with Steven Goldfarb and ask their own questions.
