Professor Lesya Lymar presented in Lithuania the experience of involving medical students in practical and volunteer activities during wartime.
Recently, Vilnius, Lithuania, hosted the international AMSE 2026 Conference of the Association of Medical Schools in Europe under the theme “Academic Medicine Under Pressure in Times of Uncertainty.” Bogomolets National Medical University was represented by Professor Lesya Lymar, Director of the Educational and Scientific Center for Continuous Professional Education of the Institute of Postgraduate Education. Together with Professor Yurii Kuchyn, Rector of Bogomolets National Medical University, she presented a joint report on the University’s experience of early student involvement in practical and volunteer activities during the full-scale war in Ukraine.
The conference brought together representatives of European medical universities to discuss the challenges facing academic medicine, medical education and research, including resilient education in times of crisis, digitalization, artificial intelligence, personalized medicine, mental health and professional burnout.
In her presentation, Professor Lesya Lymar highlighted different areas of student engagement, including humanitarian and medical initiatives, blood donation campaigns, first-aid training, and support for military personnel, internally displaced people, and residents of frontline and recently liberated territories.
This experience is an important part of the professional development of future doctors. In wartime, early practical experience and volunteering go beyond additional educational activities — they help develop professional responsibility, resilience, teamwork, solidarity and an understanding of the doctor’s social mission.
Participation in AMSE 2026 also created an opportunity for professional exchange with European medical universities and discussion of approaches to maintaining the continuity and quality of medical education during times of crisis. The experience of Bogomolets National Medical University demonstrated to the international academic community how Ukrainian medical education continues to develop and prepare future healthcare professionals despite the challenges of full-scale war.
