A Unique Operation: The Story of Saving a Ukrainian Armed Forces Major
Major of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Noskovych, who sustained a severe injury while carrying out a combat mission, was transferred to the University Clinic of Bogomolets National Medical University as part of a medical evacuation.
Doctors diagnosed a severe combined injury — a fracture-dislocation of the femoral head. Such an injury significantly impairs hip joint function and often leaves no possibility of preserving the joint. Thanks to highly qualified medical care, the defender is expected to soon return to a full and active life without physical limitations.
Oleksandr Noskovych’s journey to Kyiv was not easy — five days of waiting after sustaining a severe injury on the frontline. His fellow soldiers carried him for one and a half kilometres on their shoulders. Behind him are 26 years of military service. Ahead of him was the most important battle — the battle to return to a full and active life.
At the University Clinic of Bogomolets National Medical University, the patient underwent a comprehensive examination. The diagnosis was a fracture-dislocation of the femoral head. In addition, the patient had congenital dysplastic changes in the acetabulum, while fractures of the femoral head themselves are relatively uncommon.
Therefore, the medical team decided to perform total hip arthroplasty using one of the most modern hip implants, combining high reliability, durability and the potential for a rapid return to an active lifestyle.
For the procedure, the surgeons selected the Direct Anterior Approach, using the Bikini modification, which allows access to the hip joint through natural intermuscular and internervous planes without cutting the muscles.
This minimally invasive hip replacement technique can reduce postoperative pain, preserve muscles and tendons, facilitate earlier mobilization, accelerate the restoration of walking and support a faster return to normal daily activities.
Another advantage of the Bikini approach is that the incision is positioned along the natural groin crease. After healing, the scar is usually barely noticeable — an important consideration, particularly for women and young, active patients.
At the same time, such complex surgical procedures require specialized equipment and a highly qualified surgeon. The operation was performed by Maksym Baida, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at the University Clinic of Bogomolets National Medical University, who specializes in modern joint replacement techniques and reconstructive surgery for severe traumatic injuries.
The results of the coordinated multidisciplinary team’s work are impressive: on the second day after surgery, Oleksandr was already able to stand and walk. By the eighth day, he was preparing for discharge and early rehabilitation, which plays an important role in accelerating his return to normal daily life.
Doctors also emphasize that Oleksandr is exceptionally motivated — and strong patient motivation is always an important part of successful recovery.
The ultimate goal of this tremendous effort is to help the Ukrainian officer return to an active life — to play football again and enjoy skiing.
