Preferred Selections: Exploring the World’s Top Choices for Education

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Indians are now studying in more than 240 countries worldwide. While the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and Canada remain the preferred choice, students are also exploring options in countries like Ukraine, Uzbekistan, the Philippines, Russia, Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan. The figures surged post-pandemic, with approximately 7.5 lakh Indian students pursuing higher education abroad in 2022. This marks a notable rise from the 4.5 lakh recorded in 2017 and 2.6 lakhs in 2020. In 2022, India overtook China as the country with the highest number of international students in the United States.

The United States of America

A report by Open Doors 2022 shows that the number of Indian students enrolled in US universities surged by almost 20% for the academic year 2021-2022, reaching a total enrollment of 1,99,182.

United Kingdom

Since the introduction of the Graduate Route visa by the British government in 2019, the UK has witnessed a substantial increase in the number of Indian students joining their universities. According to statistics available on the UK government website, 1.4 lakh sponsored study visas were granted to Indians in 2022, a significant increase from 34,261 visas in 2019.

Canada

Canada has also experienced a consistent rise in the number of Indian students enrolling in its colleges. The data indicates that over 2.2 lakh Indian study permit holders were studying in Canadian colleges in 2019, and Indian students constitute 34% of Canada’s foreign student population. Ukraine and China (Popular destinations for Medical Education)

Ukraine and China have always been popular among students who wish to pursue medical education. However, the ongoing crisis in Ukraine has put a question mark on the future of around 18,000-20,000 Indian medical students. On the other hand, due to the pandemic, around 23,000 medical students studying in China were unable to return. China opened up student visas in August last year, and around 6,200 of them have obtained it. Hopefully, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine will soon be resolved, and the future of Indian medical students will improve and Supreme Court of India allows MBBS students from China, Ukraine to clear finals in 2 attempts
