Apostille
When applying to Ukrainian universities, international students must ensure that their foreign documents are legally valid and officially recognised in Ukraine.
This requires an official document legalisation procedure, which depends on the country where the documents were issued.
In simple terms, legalisation confirms the authenticity of your documents and allows them to be accepted by Ukrainian universities and state authorities.
What Is an Apostille
An apostille is an international form of legalisation that confirms:
- the authenticity of signatures;
- the validity of stamps and seals;
- that the document was issued by a competent authority.
For international students, this means that documents issued in your home country become legally valid for use in Ukraine.
When an Apostille Is Required
If your documents were issued in a country that is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention (1961), they must be apostilled. Ukraine is a party to this Convention, so apostilled documents are accepted without additional consular legalisation.
After graduation, an apostille allows a Ukrainian diploma to be used abroad in countries that recognise the Hague Convention.
If your country is not a member of the Hague Convention, apostilling your Ukrainian diploma is a mandatory step that enables further legalisation of the document through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of your country.
Documents That Usually Require an Apostille
Most commonly, an apostille is required for:
- diplomas and certificates of previous education;
- academic transcripts and diploma supplements;
- birth certificates (if required by the university);
- powers of attorney (if applicable);
- other official documents issued by state authorities.
Passports and travel documents are not apostilled.
Important Information
- An apostille is issued only in the country where the document was originally issued.
- The format and processing time depend on the national authorities of that country.
- An apostille does not replace translation — a notarised Ukrainian translation is required after apostille.
- Missing or incorrectly issued apostilles may cause serious delays in admission, enrolment, or residence permit procedures.
When Apostille Does Not Apply
If the country that issued your documents is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, apostille cannot be used.
In this case, documents must undergo full consular legalisation, a more complex procedure involving state authorities and the consulate of the destination country.
Summary
- Apostille makes foreign documents legally valid in Ukraine
- Required for admission to Ukrainian universities
- Simplifies international recognition of educational documents
- Enables further legalisation of Ukrainian diplomas abroad when necessary
