KROK Guide
If you are planning to study Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing or Physical Therapy in Ukraine, the KROK exams will be a crucial milestone in your academic journey. These state qualification exams certify your professional competence and are mandatory for obtaining your degree.
KROK exams are part of the national attestation system and are recorded in USEDE — without passing them, a higher education diploma cannot be issued. For transfer students, the requirements are the same as for everyone else: passing these exams is compulsory, regardless of the university or country where you previously studied.
The KROK system consists of several sequential stages, each corresponding to a specific level of training and program requirements:
KROK 1 — Basic Sciences (Initial Stage)
- When: Around 3rd year (one-tier master) or 4th year (bachelor).
- Focus: Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology.
- Goal: Confirms your foundation before moving to clinical subjects.
This exam evaluates not only theoretical knowledge but also your ability to apply it logically in medical scenarios.
KROK 2 — Clinical Sciences (Advanced Stage)
- When: During the final years of study — usually the 5th–6th year, depending on the program.
- Focus: Therapy, surgery, pediatrics, pharmacology, dentistry, specialty-specific subjects.
- Goal: Shows readiness to work with patients or in pharmaceutical practice.
This is a more extensive and in-depth exam, covering the key clinical knowledge required by your program.
KROK 3 — Licensing Integrated Exam (Post-Internship)
- When: After internship or pre-graduation training.
- Focus: Full professional competencies.
- Goal: Confirms readiness for independent practice and licensing.
Exam Schedule and Administration
The KROK exam calendar is approved annually by the Ministry of Health and the examination center, generally aligned with the academic calendar. Each stage is designed to objectively assess your knowledge and skills, ensuring safe and competent professional practice. Exam results are evaluated solely by the official state examination commission; neither the university nor any third-party organization can influence the outcome. Exam Organization:
- Exams are held in specially equipped classrooms or accredited centers approved by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
- Each student undergoes identity verification, and access to the exam room is strictly controlled.
- Exams are supervised by official examiners; records are maintained by the university and transmitted to USEDE.
- Format: 200 multiple-choice questions (one correct answer out of five), 200 minutes, written on answer sheets.
- For international students, exams can sometimes be taken at accredited locations outside Ukraine, if permitted by the procedure.
This setup ensures objectivity, transparency, and legality, with all decisions resting solely with the official examination commission.
Minimum Requirements and Retakes
Each KROK stage has a minimum passing score. Usually, this is a set percentage of correct answers per test section, updated periodically by official regulators.
If a student does not meet the required score, retakes are allowed according to regulations, though the number of attempts and timing are determined by the exam center and the university.
KROK is Important
- Mandatory for graduation: Without passing the relevant stages, a degree in your chosen clinical specialty cannot be awarded.
- Legal assurance of quality: Results are recorded in the national system and form the basis for issuing your diploma.
- Foundation for your professional career: KROK demonstrates your readiness for further practice, internships, residency, or clinical work.
